DEFINITION – Dandruff is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp.
COMMON CAUSES – Not cleaning/scrubbing often enough, shampooing too often, psoriasis, eczema, sensitivity to hair care products, or a yeast-like fungus. Dry skin is the most common cause of flaking.
I have seen at least 2000 heads of hair in my career as a stylist thus far and there has been a lot of misconceptions about properly shampooing your hair and what dandruff is and how to get rid of it!
So here are some tips to help prevent, treat or simply maintain a healthy scalp.
BRUSH YOUR SCALP – Yes, so we brush our hair styling, but do we really focus on the scalp? This stimulates blood flow, brushing exfoliates dead skin cells and allows your scalp to breath. Use a soft natural bristled brush, a synthetic nylon one works well too, try to avoid using a brush with those little ball ends as they can break off and actually scratch your scalp!
STIMULATE & CLEANSE – So, how well do you wash and rinse your hair? Big blob of shampoo, scrub, scrub. splash splash…good to go. NO! Well in theory, yes, but truly wet the hair well, lather a quarter size in your hands then apply to the scalp, massage, stimulate focusing on your scalp and then massaging to your ends last. If its hard to get through or has that grimy, oily thick feeling, you need to rinse, repeat OR…
CLARIFY! This should be lathered and let sit 3-5 minutes! It needs to lift dead skin cells, break through product build up. You should clarify once a week.
CONDITION! Aim for the ends first and then massage into scalp.
ALWAYS RINSE YOUR SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER OUT WELL
If your Scalp irritation persists, I’d go talk to your family Doctor.
Wishing you all Happy, Healthy Hair Days.
